About Us

“Most construction advice online is either too basic or too complicated. I launched this site to provide clear, professional-grade guidance—the kind you only get after two decades on the tools—to help you master your build without the expensive mistakes.”

Why I Started JourneymanTips.com

I started this website because I was tired of seeing my apprentices struggle to find good information. When looking for guides to help my crew, I found two extremes: articles by DIYers that were flat-out wrong, or overly complex engineering manuals for high-rises that didn’t apply to residential job sites.
Coming from a family of teachers—my parents, sister, and brother-in-law all taught—sharing knowledge is in my DNA. I wanted to build a place where anyone can get the “Goldilocks” version: professional, accurate information that is easy to understand and quick to apply.

20 Years on the Tools: The Man Behind the Red Seal

My journey started on a roof at ten years old, laying shingles for my dad’s friend. I fell in love with the camaraderie of a crew and the satisfaction of seeing a job completed that I had a hand in.
The Standard of a Journeyman
Earning my Journeyman status and Red Seal certification is one of my proudest achievements. It wasn’t just about time on the clock; it was about surviving a gauntlet of tests where not even a single millimeter of variance was allowed on final projects. After facing a 4-hour exam and a mountain of technical requirements, you develop a deep respect for the “why” behind the “how.”
No “Hacks”—Just Doing it Right
On this site, you won’t find “shortcuts” that compromise the build. It grinds my gears to see people framing with screws—it has no shear force, it’s wrong, and it’s against code. I’m here to tell you the truth about construction. From understanding why we use a nail over a screw to the one tool I never step onto a job site without (my trusty flat bar), I’m sharing the professional standards that keep a house standing for a century.
My Mission for You
I want you to leave this site feeling empowered. Whether you are an apprentice starting your first week or a homeowner tackling a renovation, my goal is to give you the confidence of a pro so you can look at your finished project and know it was done right.
